Math homework can be a real struggle for many high school students. They are flustered, aggravated and just don’t seem to “get it.” But a sister or brother has no problem at all – so it isn’t the homework. What is the real problem here and how can it become easier to understand for some students?

Probably the most common issue is that some parents eagerly taught their child math from an early age, constantly drilling and giving pop quizzes. This creates some students that have a little bit of a head start early on and they have the confidence to tackle the subject from the start. Others didn’t have a parent involved in their math instruction and lost confidence quickly, thinking they just aren’t math people. But that doesn’t explain the difference between two siblings who probably had the same experience with their parents.
Not all children are created exactly alike, not even twins. High school math classes require a lot of hard work initially to get a good start. If that attention and effort isn’t put forth in the beginning, the student is lost very quickly. With full classrooms in public schools and overwhelmed teachers, that student will forever flounder and never fully understand algebra, trigonometry and calculus. At best, they will slide by and barely pass the class, convinced they are just not math people.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Proving to the student that they can understand it, and might even like it, is the start. Then take it back to the beginning and start building a good math foundation with a tutor that is available to answer all those questions.
