When in high school most of your day is planned out and your teachers and parents have a fairly tight rein on you. But going away to college is a completely different experience, so different that some students that had a poor experience in high school will excel in college! Regardless of your grades in high school, here are some ways to prepare to handle the lack of oversight of your ambition in college.
High School
Your parents stood a rather close watch on your performance while you were in high school, and this will not be the case when you’re in college, most likely. You will need to know how to handle your time both educational and personal. Here are some things to think about in your last year before college.
The Effect of Drugs
Pay special attention to how the drugs you take effect you and your learning. College is going to be intense and you don’t need your allergy medicine, medical marijuana or drinking alcohol holding you back. Take an honest look at how alert you are for study hours and during lectures. Talk to your doctor about alternatives in your prescriptions, if necessary.
Time Management
Waiting until the last day before an assignment is due is something you might have been able to frequently pull off in high school. But that isn’t going to work for you anymore in most scenarios. Learn how to pace yourself with your studies and dedicate a certain time period every week for each class. Always keep ahead and you’ll never get buried under your to-do list.
Talk to Your Team
Speak with your counselors and college admissions support team about how to plan your days around your studies. Attempt to do this during your last year of high school to get a feel for what you’re in for in college.
